How to tell if a peptide vial has gone bad (and what to ignore)

A peptide vial that looks "off" is the most common reason people throw away product they already paid for, and half the time the thing they're looking at doesn't matter.

The two checks with data behind them

Color and clarity, but only on the reconstituted liquid. Once you've mixed a peptide with bacteriostatic water, it should stay clear, like water. Floaties or haze in the liquid mean discard it. Tiny bubbles at the edge that disappear back into the liquid are normal, not a defect. This is a per-dose check, not a one-time check: look before every injection, not just the first one.

Storage discipline: freezer for powder, fridge for liquid, never mixed up. Lyophilized (unreconstituted) peptide goes in the freezer for long-term storage. Once you add water, it moves to the fridge and gets used within about a month. The one rule that actually matters here: never freeze a reconstituted vial, and never freeze-thaw it. That cycle breaks the peptide in a way a fridge-to-counter-to-fridge slip doesn't.

What people worry about that doesn't tell you much

Two things get treated as red flags and aren't:

  • Powder texture. Whether the lyophilized powder is a solid puck, a cracked puck, or loose dust is irrelevant. It says nothing about what's inside the vial.
  • How little powder there looks like. Powder volume isn't peptide quantity. A 60 mg retatrutide vial holds roughly the same visible amount of powder as a 10 mg vial of the same compound. "This looks like less than I paid for" is usually just how lyophilization looks, not a short-fill.

On the vacuum-draw test: a lot of guides tell you to check for a vacuum pull when you first puncture a lyophilized vial's septum, on the theory that a compromised seal means a compromised vial. The failure mode that's actually dangerous isn't temperature

Dropping a vial or letting it sit out of the fridge for an hour isn't the disaster some guides make it out to be. The real risk is bacterial growth at the seal, not a temperature blip: swab the septum with alcohol before every draw, and keep the vial in a box rather than loose in the fridge door. Airborne bacteria at an unprotected seal is the failure mode that actually ends a vial early.

One color check that is grounded, and worth knowing: color can tell you about identity, not freshness. GHK-Cu powder is always blue. If yours is white, that's a different compound in the vial, full stop. That's a sourcing problem, not a degradation one, but it's the one place where "the color looks wrong" is genuinely diagnostic. The most dramatic version of this on record: a man's skin visibly darkened from what he'd bought as retatrutide. He was injecting Melanotan II. Same lesson, worse compound.

The short version

Check the liquid, not the powder. Never freeze-thaw. Swab the seal. Ignore puck-vs-dust and "it looks like less powder than I paid for." If the color is wrong for that specific compound (GHK-Cu blue, for instance), that's a wrong-vial problem, not a spoiled one: verify with a COA or send it to a lab before you inject.
